The Andromeda galaxy, M31, appears as a faint fuzzy blob to the unaided eye. The light you see from it is over two million years old. This image captures Andromeda rising above the Italian Alps, a familiar sight for observers in mid-latitude northern locations. It is the closest large galaxy to our own Milky Way.
