These asperitas clouds, formally recognized as a distinct cloud type only recently, are unusual atmospheric structures. While they appear menacing, their cause is unknown, and they do not seem to be harbingers of severe weather. Unlike most low cloud decks, asperitas clouds have significant vertical structure underneath.
