Comet Catalina Tails
NASA APOD · José J. Chambó
COSMIC MESSAGE
This telescopic mosaic from December 21, 2015, shows the tails of Comet Catalina sweeping across a field of view as wide as 10 full moons. The comet's dust tail fans out below and left, trailing behind its orbit. Its ion tail, pushed directly away from the Sun by solar wind, points upward and right. The distant galaxies and faint stars in the background are in the constellation Virgo.
