Sky Lights in the New Year

COSMIC MESSAGE
A moderate geomagnetic storm, triggered by a coronal mass ejection, brought auroral displays to Earth's high latitudes on New Year's Eve. This New Year's nightscape from Australia shows shimmering reddish curtains of aurora australis along the southern horizon. Alongside the aurora, permanent jewels of the southern skies are visible, including the southern Milky Way and the Southern Cross.
