MWC 922: The Red Square Nebula

NASA APOD · Peter Tuthill (Sydney U.) & James Lloyd (Cornell)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Red Square Nebula, MWC 922, appears to be embedded in a square-shaped nebula, though no one is quite sure why. This image combines infrared exposures from the Hale Telescope and the Keck-2 Telescope. One hypothesis is that the central star or stars expelled cones of gas during a late developmental stage.
