M101, a spiral galaxy almost twice the size of our Milky Way, is about 170,000 light-years across. It was one of the first spiral nebulae observed with Lord Rosse's Leviathan telescope in the 19th century. This multiwavelength view is a composite of images from space-based telescopes. M101 is one of the last entries in Charles Messier's catalog.
