Edge-On Galaxy NGC 5866
NASA APOD · Hunter Wilson
COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 5866 is a lenticular galaxy seen edge-on, making it appear remarkably thin. Many disk galaxies are just as thin, but are not oriented this way from our perspective. It has numerous, complex dust lanes that appear dark and red, while its disk of young stars gives it a blue hue. The blue disk extends past the dust in the extremely thin galactic plane.
