Light Pillars over Alaska
NASA APOD · Allisha Libby
COSMIC MESSAGE
These are light pillars, not auroras, appearing behind houses in Alaska. They form when flat, fluttering ice crystals near the ground reflect light from sources like streetlights. Normally, these ice crystals are high in the atmosphere, creating sun pillars, but in freezing temperatures, they can form much closer to us.
