The Extraordinary Spiral in LL Pegasi

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

A strange spiral structure surrounds the star LL Pegasi. No one is entirely sure what created it, but it is likely related to a binary star system entering the planetary nebula phase, ejecting its outer atmosphere. This huge spiral spans about a third of a light-year across, winding four or five complete turns with remarkable regularity. A new layer appears about every 800 years.
