M89: Elliptical Galaxy with Outer Shells and Plumes

NASA APOD · Mark Hanson
COSMIC MESSAGE

M89 is an elliptical galaxy surrounded by faint shells and plumes. These features might be the debris from smaller galaxies M89 absorbed over the past billion years. Another idea is that they are ripples from a collision with another large galaxy, creating density waves. Regardless of their origin, these structures reveal the dynamic history of galactic interactions.
