NGC 4449: Close-up of a Small Galaxy
NASA APOD · Hubble Legacy Archive
COSMIC MESSAGE
Grand spiral galaxies often get all the glory, but small irregular galaxies like NGC 4449 also form stars. About 12 million light-years distant, NGC 4449 is less than 20,000 light-years across. This Hubble Space Telescope close-up shows its young, blue star clusters and pink star-forming regions. It is often compared to the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way.
