Red Sprites over the Channel

Red sprites are brief, mysterious flashes of light that occur high above thunderstorms. They are difficult to capture, but this video, taken from a mountain in northern France, shows them dancing over the English Channel. These lightning-like events last only a few milliseconds, occurring about 600 kilometers away from the observer. They are a fascinating phenomenon in Earth's upper atmosphere.
