Gravitational lensing, predicted by Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, gives these distant galaxies a whimsical appearance. Nicknamed the Cheshire Cat galaxy group, its two large elliptical galaxies are framed by arcs. These arcs are optical images of distant background galaxies, their light bent and magnified by the gravity of the foreground galaxy group. This image combines X-ray data from Chandra and optical data from Hubble.
