During the 2017 total solar eclipse, observers saw a 'diamond ring' effect just before and after totality. This occurs when a sliver of the Sun's bright disk appears through a valley on the Moon's limb. This image, taken in South Carolina, shows the diamond ring against a cloudy sky at the end of totality.
