The Milky Way arcs across the sky over Monument Valley. While the Milky Way can be seen from many locations, the iconic buttes of Monument Valley provide a unique foreground. These buttes, like the Mittens and Merrick Butte, are composed of hard rock that remained after softer surrounding rock was eroded away by water. This image was taken about a month ago, capturing both the terrestrial and cosmic landscapes.
