COSMIC MESSAGE
On September 7, 2017, a severe geomagnetic storm triggered a colorful display of aurora borealis over Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The aurora, or northern lights, are caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere. The storm was caused by a giant solar active region, AR 2673, which produced a powerful solar flare and a coronal mass ejection directed at Earth. The Big Dipper is visible in the background.
