Voyager 1 and 2 launched in 1977, setting out to visit the outer planets. Forty years later, they are still going. Voyager 1 is now more than 19 light-hours from the Sun, beyond the heliosphere, which is the region where the Sun's wind and magnetic field are felt. It is humanity's first ambassador to interstellar space.
