Galaxy NGC 474: Shells and Star Streams

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxy NGC 474 shows multiple layers of emission, a strange and complex feature for an elliptical galaxy. Scientists believe these shells might be tidal tails, debris from smaller galaxies absorbed over the last billion years. Another theory suggests they are ripples from an ongoing collision with the spiral galaxy just above it.
