Martian Chiaroscuro
Deep shadows on Mars create sharp contrasts in this high-resolution image from the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The scene spans about 1.5 kilometers, showing a sand dune field in a southern highlands crater. The photo was taken when the Sun was low, illuminating only the dune crests. This highlights the stark Martian landscape.
