COSMIC MESSAGE
M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a large spiral galaxy, almost twice the size of our Milky Way, at 170,000 light-years across. It was one of the first spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's Leviathan telescope in the 19th century. This telescopic view also includes spiky foreground stars from within our own galaxy and a companion dwarf galaxy.
