The Extraordinary Spiral in LL Pegasi

NASA APOD · Domingo Pestana & Raul Villaverde
COSMIC MESSAGE

The strange spiral structure in LL Pegasi is likely related to a star in a binary system entering its planetary nebula phase, ejecting its outer atmosphere. This huge spiral spans about a third of a light-year, winding four or five complete turns with remarkable regularity. Given the expansion rate of the gas, a new layer appears about every 800 years, matching the orbital period of the binary stars.
