Rings Around the Ring Nebula

The familiar Ring Nebula, M57, reveals more than what a small telescope can show. The central ring is about one light-year across, but this deep exposure explores looping filaments of glowing gas extending much farther. This composite image combines data from three different large telescopes, showing narrowband hydrogen emission, visible light, and infrared light. It demonstrates the complex structure of this planetary nebula.
