The Edge-On Spindle Galaxy

NASA APOD · Adam Block
COSMIC MESSAGE

Many disk galaxies are as thin as NGC 5866, but this one is seen edge-on. The Spindle Galaxy, also known as M102, is full of dark, red dust lanes. Its bright stars give it a blue hue. From our vantage point, it looks like a spindle of light.
