The Iris Nebula in a Field of Dust

NASA APOD · Franco Sgueglia & Francesco Sferlazza
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Iris Nebula, NGC 7023, is a striking blue flower in a field of dark interstellar dust. Its blue color comes from light from the bright star SAO 19158 reflecting off a dense patch of dust. Blue light is preferentially reflected, similar to how Earth's sky appears blue. The surrounding pervasive dust has a brown tint, partly due to photoluminescence, where dust converts ultraviolet radiation into visible light.
