COSMIC MESSAGE
Mars was just past its closest approach to Earth when this image was taken, a mere 57.6 million kilometers away. The Red Planet's disk appears near its maximum size in Earth-bound telescopes, though it is still less than 1/74th the apparent diameter of a Full Moon. Broad regional surface shadings are reappearing as the latest planet-wide dust storm subsides. The bright south polar cap is visible at the bottom.
