Cocoon Nebula Deep Field

NASA APOD · Marcel Drechsler (Baerenstein Obs.)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Inside the Cocoon Nebula, cataloged as IC 5146, is a newly developing cluster of stars. This beautiful nebula is nearly 15 light-years wide and about 3,300 light-years away in the northern constellation Cygnus. Like other star-forming regions, it glows red from excited hydrogen gas and blue from starlight reflected by dust at its edges. The nebula also marks a long trail of obscuring interstellar dust clouds.
