Supernumerary Rainbows over New Jersey
NASA APOD · John Entwistle
COSMIC MESSAGE
Rainbows usually show only one arc of colors. But when raindrops are all nearly the same size, sunlight can interfere with itself. This creates supernumerary rainbows, which are extra, fainter arcs of color inside the main one. This photo caught at least five of them over the New Jersey shore.
