In 2004, a "flying saucer" crash-landed in the Utah desert. This was the Genesis sample return capsule, part of a NASA mission to study the Sun. The unexpected hard landing, at over 300 kilometers per hour, occurred because the parachutes failed to open. The Genesis mission had been orbiting the Sun to collect solar wind particles.
