COSMIC MESSAGE
The California Nebula, NGC 1499, drifts through the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, echoing the outline of California. Our Sun is about 1,500 light-years from this emission nebula, which is around 100 light-years long. The most prominent glow is the red light characteristic of hydrogen.
