Methane Bubbles Frozen in Lake Baikal

NASA APOD · Kristina Makeeva
COSMIC MESSAGE

Lake Baikal in Russia, the world's deepest and oldest freshwater lake, contains vast amounts of methane. These frozen bubbles in the lake's ice are pockets of methane gas. While most of the methane remains trapped, its potential release is a subject of scientific study due to its role as a greenhouse gas.
