The Expanding Echoes of Supernova 1987A

NASA APOD · David Malin, AAT
COSMIC MESSAGE

Supernova 1987A, first seen in 1987, created this expanding bullseye pattern. Light from the supernova bounced off clumps of interstellar dust, creating echoes that were reflected back to us years later. These time-lapse images, recorded between 1988 and 1992 by the Anglo Australian Telescope, show the light echoes moving out from the supernova's original position.
