COSMIC MESSAGE
On January 21, during a total lunar eclipse, many imagers captured a meteoroid impact flash against the dim red Moon. Craters from ancient impacts are common on the Moon, but optical flashes from impacting meteoroids have only been regularly recorded since the 1990s. These flashes are difficult to see against a bright, sunlit lunar surface.
