Rigil Kentaurus, also known as Alpha Centauri, is the closest star system to our Sun, only 4.37 light years away. In this southern sky view, it shines brightly near the top. Below it, dark nebulae like Sandqvist 169 and 172 appear in silhouette against the rich star fields of the Milky Way. These dusty clouds are part of the Circinus-West molecular cloud complex.
