COSMIC MESSAGE
Irregular galaxy NGC 55 is about 6 million light-years away, part of the Sculptor Galaxy Group. It's similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud, but much more distant. NGC 55 spans about 50,000 light-years and is seen nearly edge-on. This gives it a flattened, narrow profile in photographs.
