What would it look like to orbit a black hole? The gas swirling around it forms an accretion disk, glowing hot as it falls inward. This animation shows a rendering of the disk around the supermassive black hole at the center of NGC 3147. Gas at the inner edge of this disk is so close to the black hole that it is warped by the hole's gravity.
