The Iris Nebula in a Field of Dust

NASA APOD · Markus Bauer
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Iris Nebula, NGC 7023, blossoms at the upper left of this field of cosmic dust clouds in the constellation Cepheus. About 1,300 light-years away, its blue color comes from pervasive dust grains reflecting light from a nearby hot, bluish star. Darker dust clouds obscure much of the background, creating a contrast with the bright nebula. The Iris spans about 6 light-years across.
