Valles Marineris: The Grand Canyon of Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The largest canyon in the Solar System, Valles Marineris, cuts across Mars. This grand valley is over 3,000 kilometers long, up to 600 kilometers across, and as deep as 8 kilometers. Earth's Grand Canyon is 800 kilometers long, 30 kilometers across, and 1.8 kilometers deep by comparison. The origin of Valles Marineris is unknown, though one hypothesis suggests it began as a crack billions of years ago.
