The Lagoon Nebula's center is a region of active star formation. Extreme stellar winds and intense starlight have sculpted long, funnel-shaped clouds, each about half a light-year long. Herschel 36, a very bright star, illuminates the area. This region is a place of dramatic temperature differences, where hot young stars interact with cool dust and gas.
