Radio, The Big Ear, and the Wow! Signal

NASA APOD · Rick Scott
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University was one of the first to listen for signals from space. About the size of three football fields, it used an immense metal ground plane and two fence-like reflectors. This photo shows the tiltable reflector, which helped scan the sky as the Earth rotated. The Big Ear famously detected the "Wow!" signal, a strong narrowband radio signal, in 1977.
