COSMIC MESSAGE

Mercury, the innermost planet, has a thin atmosphere containing sodium. Sunlight excites these sodium atoms, causing them to glow and form a tail. This deep image, taken from Italy, shows Mercury and its yellow sodium tail extending into space.
