SS 433: Binary Star Micro-Quasar
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
SS 433 is an unusual binary star system. Its name comes from a catalog of stars that emit radiation characteristic of atomic hydrogen. Its unique behavior comes from a compact object, either a black hole or a neutron star, with an accretion disk and jets. Because these jets resemble those around supermassive black holes in distant galaxies, SS 433 is considered a micro-quasar.
