COSMIC MESSAGE
The California Nebula, NGC 1499, is a molecular cloud about 1,000 light-years from our Sun in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way. Its outline happens to resemble the shape of California. This classic emission nebula is about 100 light-years long. The most prominent glow is the red light from hydrogen atoms recombining after being ionized by nearby hot stars.
