Leaning Tower, Active Sun

On March 27, a hazy atmosphere provided a natural filter for this telephoto view of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Large sunspots from solar active regions 2975 and 2976 are visible against the solar disk, positioned between the Duomo and the tower. Just one day later, spacecraft observed active region 2975 unleash a series of solar flares and two coronal mass ejections. The largest impact on March 31 triggered a geomagnetic storm and auroras.
