A Vortex Aurora over Iceland

COSMIC MESSAGE
This swirling vortex of light over Iceland is an aurora, not a vacuum. Auroras are created by particles from the Sun hitting Earth's atmosphere. This display was caused by a coronal mass ejection, which rippled through Earth's magnetosphere. The highest red parts of the aurora occur over 250 kilometers high, glowing as oxygen atoms are excited by the solar particles.
