Mercury's Sodium Tail

NASA APOD · Sebastian Voltmer
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mercury, our solar system's innermost planet, can display an unexpected tail when imaged with long exposures. This tail is made of sodium atoms, liberated from Mercury's surface by sunlight and pushed away. The sodium glows yellow when excited by the Sun's light.
