Dust pillars are like interstellar mountains, slowly eroded by their environment. The Hubble Space Telescope captured the end of a huge gas and dust pillar in the Trifid Nebula (M20). A smaller pillar points up, and an unusual jet points to the upper left. Many bright dots are newly formed stars.
