In 1974, humanity sent this message from Earth towards the globular star cluster M13. Broadcast from the Arecibo Observatory, it was a string of 1s and 0s, forming a diagram. This attempt at extraterrestrial communication was largely ceremonial, as humanity regularly broadcasts signals into space by accident. M13 is about 25,000 light-years away, so any reply would take tens of thousands of years to reach us.
