The Lagoon Nebula without Stars

NASA APOD · Sameer Dhar
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, is a bright star-forming region about 5,000 light-years away in Sagittarius. Ridges of glowing interstellar gas and dark dust clouds inhabit its turbulent, cosmic depths. This stunning view of the Lagoon, nearly 100 light-years across, is dominated by the red emission of ionized hydrogen atoms recombining with stripped electrons. It remains a popular stop on telescopic tours toward the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.
