COSMIC MESSAGE
The sky above the Czech Republic shows a rarely seen form of lightning: red sprites. These filaments of light occur after powerful cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. They begin as balls of ionized air, about 100 meters across, shooting down from 80 kilometers high at a tenth of the speed of light. They are quickly followed by a group of upward-streaking ionized balls.
