A Long Snaking Filament on the Sun

NASA APOD · Alan Friedman (Averted Imagination)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Earlier this month, the Sun displayed one of the longest filaments on record, seen here as a bright, curving streak. This snaking filament was estimated to be over 350,000 kilometers long, more than half the Sun's radius. Filaments are hot gas held aloft by the Sun's magnetic field, appearing as prominences if viewed from the side.
